Negotiations over a settlement have ceased.
President Biden’s administration has suspended legal negotiations in which it had considered paying $450,000 to each adult and child separated at the southern border during the previous administration.
Officials from the Departments of Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, and Justice had proposed paying each person $450,000, or nearly $1 million per two-person family, to settle claims about the lasting traumatic impact of being separated as a result of the zero-tolerance policy.
A spokesperson for the Justice Department said, “While the parties have been unable to reach a global settlement agreement at this time, we remain committed to engaging with the plaintiffs and to bringing justice to the victims of this abhorrent policy.”
News of the potential settlement had drawn a negative response from many in Congress who are concerned about the crisis at the southern border.
